What is a Geographical Indication (GI)?

A Geographical Indication (GI) is an indication used on goods that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities, reputation, or characteristics that are essentially attributable to that place of origin. GIs serve as a mark of authenticity and quality assurance for consumers, while protecting producers' rights and preserving traditional knowledge and cultural heritage.

In India, GIs are governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. Well-known Indian GIs include Darjeeling Tea, Kancheepuram Silk, Kolhapuri Chappal, Basmati Rice, Alphonso Mango, and Tirupati Laddu, among many others.
